Jay Collins serves as Lieutenant Governor of Florida. Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed him in August 2025, succeeding Jeanette Nuñez; he was sworn in the same day and resigned his Florida Senate seat to take the office.
He served roughly two decades in the U.S. Army as a Special Forces soldier — a Green Beret — before retiring, and represented a Tampa-area district in the Florida Senate. He ran for Governor in 2026.
About this office
The Governor is Florida's chief executive: signing or vetoing every bill the Legislature passes, setting the state budget proposal, appointing judges and agency heads, and directing the response when a hurricane crosses the state. Florida holds a closed primary, so only registered Republicans may vote in this race.
