Who is Jennifer Canady?
Jennifer Canady was born in Lakeland and still lives here. She earned her teaching degree at Florida State University and a master's in special education at the University of South Florida, and became a longtime teacher at Lakeland Christian School, where she directs the RISE Institute for STEM learning and entrepreneurship.
Lakeland runs through her life. She attended Scott Lake Elementary, St. Paul Lutheran School and Lakeland Highlands Jr. High, graduated from Kathleen High School and worked from a young age in her family's business, Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital. Before Lakeland Christian, she taught fifth grade at Carlton Palmore Elementary and Cleveland Court Elementary. She coaches the school's FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team and grows food for the community at the Urban Farm at Mass Market. She and her husband, Charles, have been married more than 25 years, have two daughters, Julia and Anna, and are members of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lakeland.
She is a classroom teacher who now chairs the House committee that writes Florida's education and workforce law.
Why does it matter that Jennifer Canady is Speaker-designate?
In 2023, the 30 freshman members of the House Republican caucus chose Canady by consensus to lead the House for the 2028 to 2030 term, as long as she keeps winning re-election and Republicans keep the majority.
That would make her the first female Speaker of the Florida House and only the second House Speaker from Polk County, after Perry E. Murray of Frostproof, who served from 1949 to 1951. The Speaker decides which bills move and helps write the state budget. Re-electing her keeps that seat at the head of the table for Polk County.
"I look forward to the work that we'll do together as a group to write the next chapter of Florida's success story," Canady said. "And to have the opportunity to lead that, it's really the honor of a lifetime."
What has Jennifer Canady passed in the Florida House?
Canady is the first-named sponsor of bills that are now Florida law, according to the Florida House record:
- Protecting newborns. HB 775 (Chapter 2024-213) expanded Florida's safe-haven law so a parent can surrender an infant to medical staff at the hospital after delivery, or call 911 and have EMS meet them. It passed the House 117 to 0 and the Senate 35 to 0.
- Guarding critical infrastructure. HB 275 (Chapter 2024-197) created criminal penalties for tampering with or trespassing on critical infrastructure, and for hacking their networks. It passed 110 to 5 and 39 to 0. In 2025 her HB 1121 (Chapter 2025-29) increased penalties for flying drones over critical infrastructure. It passed 114 to 0 and 37 to 0.
- Schools and military families. HB 1285 (Chapter 2024-101) created the Purple Star School District Program for districts that serve military families and directed the State Board of Education to create a classical education teaching certificate.
- The arts. HB 523 created the Florida Seal of Fine Arts Program (Chapter 2024-51).
- Medical discretion in arrests. HB 1099 (Chapter 2025-64) lets officers use discretion over immediately arresting a person with a significant medical condition. It passed 108 to 0 and 37 to 0.
- 2026: She co-sponsored HB 277 on domestic violence and protective injunctions (Chapter 2026-86)
In her first session in 2023, she helped carry the Heartbeat Protection Act, which Gov. DeSantis signed on April 13, 2023, and sponsored HB 1259, which directs school districts to share local property tax revenue for buildings and capital costs with charter schools. It became Chapter 2023-69 after passing the House 82 to 31 and the Senate 29 to 11, so charter school students in Polk get a fairer share of the dollars their parents pay.
"This bill will provide much-needed services and supplies to support women and families who make the choice to carry a child leading to parenting or adoption," she said of the pro-life law.
